Part of building a successful business starts with asking yourself a simple, but often uncomfortable, question:
Where am I… really?
Not where you hope you are.
Not where your business looks like it’s doing well from the outside.
But where you truly stand today.
That requires slowing down long enough to look honestly at what’s happening behind the scenes.
The Reality Check Most Business Owners Avoid
Let’s talk finances first.
Are you flying by the seat of your pants, waiting on incoming payments so you can cover payroll, vendors, and creditors? Are you hoping everything works out instead of knowing it will?
What about growth?
Are you growing, stagnant, or unsure because you’re buried in emails, calls, and day-to-day fires? Do you actually know how your sales are performing, or are you too busy reacting to find out?
This is where clarity matters most.
I talk about clarity in nearly every consultation because without it, businesses repeat the same problems year after year. If you’re not clear on where you are and where you want to go, nothing changes.
Trying to grow a business without clarity is like shooting an arrow at a target with your eyes closed. You might hit something, but it’s probably not what you intended.
Getting Clear Starts With Your Numbers
Let’s get practical.
If you’re using QuickBooks, spreadsheets, or accounting software, you’re on the right path. If you’re still relying on a columnar pad, we should talk. While pen and paper have their place, they’re not fast or flexible enough for today’s markets. Things change quickly—and you need real-time insight to keep up.
Start by pulling:
- Profit & Loss (Income Statement)
- Balance Sheet
- Statement of Cash Flows
Now ask yourself:
- Are customers paying invoices on time?
- Is your income consistently higher than your expenses?
- Are you spending more than you’re making?
- What expenses can be reduced or eliminated?
- What are your top income-producing services or products?
- Can you clearly identify your revenue streams?
If you can’t answer these questions easily, that’s a sign your systems need attention—not that you’re failing.
The Details Matter More Than You Think
Clarity lives in the details.
Is your accounting detailed enough to show where your money is actually going? Do you have one-time transactions that create red flags? Are you paying employees, contractors, or vendors in ways that aren’t properly documented?
You might have money in the bank and revenue coming in, but still be operating at a loss due to outstanding debt, poor categorization, or cash flow issues.
That’s not a place you want to discover too late.
Cleaning up discrepancies and organizing your financial data allows you to see your business clearly, for the first time in some cases.
Ask Yourself These Hard, but Necessary Questions
- Do I have payment terms clearly defined (Net 30, Net 60)?
- Are invoices easy to understand and reflective of the work performed?
- Are expenses categorized accurately?
- Are subscriptions, loans, and interest entered correctly?
- Are accounts reconciled regularly?
- Do I understand my P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow?
- Can I log in and see a dashboard that shows how my business is performing right now?
And perhaps the most important question:
Am I spending so much time on bookkeeping and admin that I don’t have time to do what I started this business to do?
